What is Mentor Coaching?

Mentor coaching is a professional development process that specifically prepares you for the International Coaching Federation (ICF) certification (ACC, PCC, MCC) or the European Mentoring & Coaching Council (EMCC) qualification and strengthens your coaching skills in the long term. At the heart of my services (in English or German) is process-oriented mentor coaching that provides you with individual support and focuses on your development as a coach.

You can find out more about the “Process-oriented Coaching” approach here.

Why mentor coaching?

Mentor coaching is your key to reflecting on and expanding your coaching skills in a targeted manner and taking them to the next level. You will benefit from:

  • Qualified preparation for ICF certification or re-accreditation
  • Professional, process-oriented feedback on real coaching situations
  • Personal development and strengthening your coaching identity
  • Clear focus on ICF core competencies and ethical standards

Mentor Coaching is for you if you …

  • are aiming to obtain ICF certification (ACC, PCC) and have not taken part in an ICF-accredited ACTP, Level 1 or Level 2 training course

  • Would like to deepen or review your previous coaching training

  • Would like to reflect on and further develop your effectiveness as a coach

You can read about the basics of mentor coaching here.
It might also be helpful to know when coaching supervision, rather than mentor coaching, is the more appropriate setting for your particular situation.

What to expect

In Mentor Coaching, you can expect an appreciative, resource-orientated development space that is tailored to your individual goals and needs.

You will experience Mentor Coaching as a lively, individual process that focuses on your own resources and potential rather than relying on ready-made solutions.

At the beginning and end of the programme, we evaluate your development together using a structured questionnaire – for maximum transparency and measurable progress.

As an accredited psychologist, Process-oriented Psychologist (PROCESSWORK UK), ICF Master Certified Coach, team coach (ITCA), senior practitioner (EIA), coaching supervisor (ESIA, EMCC) with teaching experience at Vinzenz Pallotti University in the master’s programme for coaching, I accompany you with appreciation, empathy and on equal terms.

You will receive detailed, constructive feedback on your own coaching sessions (live, via audio recording or transcript), always in line with the ICF competences.

All Mentor Coaching hours are transparently documented and verified for your certification.

Frequently Asked Questions

Coaching and mentor coaching differ fundamentally in terms of objectives, target group and methodology – especially according to the standards of the International Coaching Federation (ICF) and the European Mentoring & Coaching Council (EMCC).

Coaching promotes the development of clients in a personal or professional context, while mentor coaching specifically supports the professional development of coaches through feedback and reflection on their own coaching skills based on coaching sessions (live or recorded) – particularly in the context of ICF and EMCC certification processes.

Mentor coaching and coaching supervision are both essential formats for the professional development of coaches and share many basic principles such as ethics, reflection, feedback and contractual clarity.

The key difference lies in the focus: while mentor coaching specifically aims to develop and provide feedback on coaching competences, coaching supervision focuses on reflection on the coach’s self, the impact of the work and dealing with contexts and systems.

Both formats complement each other and are indispensable for sustainable development and quality assurance in coaching. Lese Sie gern den kurzen Artikel über die Unterscheidung zwischen Mentor Coaching und Coaching Supervision.

Neither coach nor mentor coach are protected terms, which means that anyone can call themselves a coach, regardless of whether they have completed training or further education.

Against this background, it is particularly important to check what training, qualifications, experience and accreditation a mentor coach possesses. This provides at least some basic information as to whether the mentor coach is undertaking continuous professional development and has demonstrated his or her knowledge and competence in the examinations associated with the accreditations. According to the ICF, if a mentor coach is at the same accreditation level, they must either have already undergone re-accreditation after three years or already hold the next higher level of accreditation.
From 2027, mentor coaches will be required to provide evidence of a Mentor Coach Specialisation supported by relevant continuing professional development in order to be recognised as mentor coaches.

What my clients say

We worked through many issues, both interpersonal relational issues with my partner of 20 years, as well as more recently with professional challenges that Peter encouraged a courageous and more adventurous approach to act bravely in dealing with and ultimately resolving complex cultural and embedded power systems. The sessions have always been open, sometimes playful, warm, spontaneous and always curious. I have no hesitation in recommending Peter
